I met Girls in the Know a few years ago when they presented at One Million Cups, a weekly event for entrepreneurs to connect to resources and tell their own start up story. I was working at the Nine Network, the St. Louis public television station as the events manager and was responsible for the hosting of this weekly event. After hearing the Girls in the Know story as presented by Gina, the Executive Director, I asked her if there was anything that a young woman with no kids of her own could do to help the organization.be-bold

Now, I had a great relationship with my mom – she’s one of my best friends. But the idea of a program that would allow trusted adults and pre-teen girls to get that sort of relationship with each other over four weeks while discussing really important issues – and forming a bond that would make them grow closer as the pre-teen girl grows up? I thought that was a pretty darn important goal and I wanted to be a part of it.

I started as an events committee member and learned more about the programming and the fundraising that was necessary to create such fabulous programming. Now I sit on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors as the secretary. I feel it’s truly a gift of love, bringing my OCD-ness about organization and event planning to a group of amazing women who are creating change in the lives of these young women both in our city and our county, no matter their background.

Please consider supporting our organization. We are raising awareness through the month of November, our month of gratitude, culminating on Giving Tuesday, 11/29. Our hope is to bring attention to Girls in the Know so that young girls today have the opportunity to become strong, empowered leaders tomorrow.
